During one of his best periods of his career the late and great David Bowie was living and working in Berlin. During the years 1976-1979 he was living in there with friend and also musician Iggy Pop. He was living in the same building as Bowie, but they didn’t share an apartment During this period he recorded his world famous albums The Idiot and Lust for Life. What not much people know, is that Bowie was clean from drugs and alcohol during that period. And that while Berlin was the Number One junkie capital at that time.
Bowie headed to Berlin during the ’70s because, if you were in music, Berlin was the place to be at that time. Before moving to Germany, David lived in Switzerland and The United States. During his time there, Bowie released his albums Low (1977), Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979).
During his Berlin years David lived at an apartment building at Hauptstrasse 155, in Berlin Schöneberg. In the ’70s Schöneberg was a fantastic area for people who weren’t perfectly fitting the bill. For instance, already from an early stage it was famous for its tolerance of the gay lifestyle.
