One of the last bridges in German hands on May 1, 1945, and was defended by elements of the Hitlerjugend. That same day, the German army and a large number of civilians managed to withdraw from the center via this bridge under heavy artillery fire from the Soviet 47th Army. Heinrich Himmler’s brother, Erwin Himmler, is said to have died during this breakout attempt.
