I got on the plane by myself. It was the very last plane of that day, and also the very last vacant seat! It became exciting whether we would leave, and whether I would get there at all. We flew to Frankfurt and from there on to Berlin. But just before departure, a catering car collided with the plane. Fortunately, the everything turned out right!
Once I arrived at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, I made my way to the wall. There I got caught up in a huge partying crowd and ended up on Potsdamer Platz. For almost two hours I was pushed further up and closer to the wall to finally be able to take the best, most beautiful pictures of the crowd tearing down the wall.
After checking the slides out of my camera, I was standing in Berlin in the middle of the night…
The next morning I would immediately fly to Belgium for my next assignment. In the early hours I went to East Berlin. Border controls and police were no longer visible. I allowed myself to let go, and got among the partying crowd to join them. No more photos were taken. I Just partied and drank beer at Unter den Linden.
Early in the morning I was already on the plane again on my way to Belgium. It is special what I experienced there on that night in Berlin. Even now, when I hear the famous song about the wall by the Dutch band Klein Orkest, I get goosebumps and think back to it. Something like that, will stick with you forever!
