Since 1975 there has been a long fence of about 120 kilometers between South Africa and Mozambique. The purpose of this fence, which was erected by South Africa, was to keep out refugees and guerrillas during the civil war in Mozambique. Poachers from Mozambique invaded wildlife sanctuaries in South Africa to kill elephants and rhinos, so the two countries agreed to build another fence between Mozambique and South Africa.
