One of the last attacks of the German Third Reich took place on 1 May 1945 over this bridge, the Weidendammer Brücke. The massive stampede by hundreds of SS, Wehrmacht soldiers and civilians was led by a Tiger tank. The Tiger managed to break through the barricade but was knocked out by an anti-tank shell and many soldiers and civilians behind the tank were killed.
